Frequently asked

Twelve common questions, answered concretely. Email [email protected] for anything else.

Q1.Is the free plan really free?

Yes. All model pages, dealer leaderboards, the BaT cross-reference with trust scoring, comparative views, outliers, and movers are open to anyone with no signup required. The free tier is the product, not a teaser — paid tiers add watchlists, alerts, API, and bulk dealer benchmarking.

Q2.Can I cancel anytime?

Yes. Cancel from account settings; access stays until the end of the current billing period. No emails to support, no "talk to retention." Refunds are handled case-by-case if you contact us within 7 days of a charge.

Q3.Do you offer a free trial?

Yes — a 3-day free trial of Premium with no credit card required. It auto-reverts to free after 3 days unless you upgrade. You can re-trial after 90 days.

Q4.How often does the data update?

Retail listings refresh every 2 hours. BaT and Cars & Bids auction ingest runs daily around 03:30–03:55 PT. The full carstats site (per-model bundles, dealer analytics, trust scores, market verdicts) is rebuilt nightly with the latest data.

Q5.What sources do you pull from?

Retail: CarGurus active listings across the trims we track. Auctions: Bring a Trailer (since at least 2024) and Cars & Bids closed auctions (with bidder logs where available). Dealer enrichment: CarFax/AutoCheck where present, dealer name/address from the listing pages themselves.

Q6.How is fair value calculated?

We anchor on the BaT 6-month median sold price when available (real clearing transactions), falling back to a confidence-adjusted dealer median. Each listing also carries a hedonic residual that prices the spec — mileage, color, options — against the model cohort. We show all three reference points side-by-side on every model page.

Q7.What is the authenticity score?

A 0–100 trust score we attach to every BaT outcome. It starts at 100 and subtracts for known noise patterns: Reserve Not Met (-30), post-auction retail relist at a premium (-25 to -35), self-dealt sales where the winner is the seller (-40), low bidder diversity (-20), top-bidder concentration over 50% (-15), and a few smaller signals. The breakdown is shown as a tooltip on every listing.

Q8.Will you add my model / trim?

We add coverage based on user demand and data availability. We currently track 47 trims across Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren, Nissan GT-R, Bentley, BMW M, Aston Martin DB12, and a few others. Email [email protected] with the trim and we'll prioritize.

Q9.How confident are you in dealer behavior labels?

Each dealer's archetype (Market Maker / Speculator / Museum / etc.) carries an explicit confidence score based on inventory size and observation window. Dealers with fewer than 3 active listings get "Unclassified" rather than a misleading label. Trust flags break down into named components so you can verify each yourself.

Q10.Is the API public?

Premium tier includes read-only API access at modest rate limits. JSON bundles for every model are also published at /api/v1/<slug>.json on the static site. Higher limits and webhook delivery come with the Dealer tier.

Q11.What about VIN-specific reports?

VIN watchlists are included in Premium — you add VINs you care about and get the daily digest filtered to events touching them. Standalone VIN reports for sale ("$X for a one-shot deep report on this car") are on the roadmap; not live yet.

Q12.Do you sell my data?

No. The only third parties involved are Stripe (billing) and our analytics provider (page views; no PII). We don't sell email lists or buyer-intent data to dealers or anyone else.

Q13.Why should I trust NextComp over CarGurus / Edmunds / classic.com?

Those tools show you data. NextComp shows you a verdict — every signal is named, scored, and traceable to its source. We catch the noise patterns (shill bids, dealer self-dealt outcomes, anchored RNMs, auction-to-retail flips) that distort raw "median sold price" comps, and we tell you when our confidence is low instead of pretending it isn't.
